Robin Blakeney comes with a long impressive background in the music business. He has worked in the recording industry in New York City, Los Angeles and Nashville for many years as a session singer, songwriter, artist and producer. A variety of artists from ‘Dobie Gray’ to ’4 The Cause’ have benefited from his melodic and lyrical talents.
Robin was born in Jackson Mississippi and started in the music business at the age of 16, writing and recording with Mark Gray and forming the Pop Gospel group, “The Concords”. They preformed on the southern gospel circuit with such acts as The Oak Ridge Boys, Andre Crouch and The Stamps Quartet. In 1976 he signed with Malaco Records as a solo pop artist and exclusive writer with their publishing company. Robin’s first album titled ‘That’s OK’ was produced by Dino Zimmerman and James Stroud and released on Malaco Records. He headlined concerts throughout the south and opened for such acts as Mac McAnally, Dan Fogelburg, The Dixie Dregs, Loggins and Messina and Paul Davis.
Through this time, Robin worked as a session singer and become active as a jingle writer, singer and producer. From 1979 to 80 Robin worked for mega producer/writer, Ed Kalehoff in New York City, and was the voice of such jingles as Molson Canadian Beer, Keds Shoes, and the NBC TV series ‘Walking Tall’ to name a few. In 1980 he moved to Nashville to sign an artist/writer deal with Robox Records and Emeryville Music Publishing Company headquartered at famed Quadrafonic Recording Studios. Simultaneously he took on the job as in-house producer for Sanborn Productions at Bull Run Studios, where he met his future production company partner, and now famed recording Engineer/Producer Bruce Sugar. In 1981 Robin and Bruce formed Synergy Productions, producing various jingles, soundtracks and artist development projects, and in 1985 moved the company to Los Angles.
Working out of Baby-O recording studios in Hollywood, Robin signed an artist deal with owners Rick Perrotta and Enrique Senker. This along with his work at Synergy Productions led to various jingle and artist projects, from the lead singing roll on the 1987 United Artist Records album “ZOXOZ” to national jingles such as Suzuki Samurai.
Although Robin still works on projects in Los Angles, in 1991 he left Synergy and Hollywood to move back to Nashville with his song catalog and new production company “Robin Blakeney Productions”. Since then he has teamed back up with co-writers Bud Reneau and Dobie Gray to expand his song catalog to include Country, Pop, R&B/Hip Hop and Alternative Rock. Robin has penned songs with many writers such as Jeff Silbar, Jimmy Griffin, Kim Tribble, Ray Herndon and Jim Beau Hinson, but he mainly collaborates these days with Reneau and Gray.
